Madras Cafe (2013) Movie Review – Hit or Flop

Madras Cafe Review

Rating: 4/5 stars (Four Stars)

What’s Good: An engrossing monologue which excavates one of India’s most overbearing conspiracies left back in the dusty pages of history.

What’s Bad: There is no commercialism, which has been smartly avoided so as to not dilute the subject matter. Music, background score has been kept limited to create any unwanted flavor to the drama than the story already contains. They are not really negatives just slightly deterring for the general public.

Watch or Not?: Shoojit Sircar and John Abraham have teamed up again to come up with one of India’s most bold and matured political thrillers! Designed with a deep rooted sense of urgency, the film builds an overwhelming tale around the darkest phase of the Lankan Civil War that marshal to conclude with a rushing end which we are all familiar with. In between the flashbacks and conspiracies, Madras Café is a film with a gritty, convincing and engrossing plot that will revel in its ability to leave you with an uneasy and helpless feeling!

Reach out to pals when feeling sad

Researchers at Concordia University suggest that the hormone oxytocin may help you accomplish just that.Mark Ellenbogen and Christopher Cardoso, researchers in Concordia’s Centre for Research in Human Development are taking a closer look at oxytocin, a hormone traditionally studied for its role
in childbirth and breastfeeding, and more recently for its effect on social behaviour.

Their latest study shows that oxytocin can increase a person’s trust in others following social rejection.Ellenbogen said it means that instead of the traditional ‘fight or flight’ response to social conflict where people get revved up to respond to a challenge or run away from it, oxytocin may promote the ‘tend and befriend’ response where people reach out to others for support after a stressful event.“That can, in turn, strengthen social bonds and may be a healthier way to cope,” he said.Cardoso, who is a doctoral student in the Department of Psychology, said that studying oxytocin may provide future options for those who suffer from mental health conditions characterized by high levels of stress and low levels of social support, like depression. The study is published in the peer-reviewed journal

Lack of sleep can turn lovers into fighters

People are much more likely to lash out at their romantic partners over relationship conflicts after a bad night’s sleep, a new study has claimed. Researchers from the University of California have found that sleepless nights can worsen lovers’ fights. “Couples who fight more are less
happy and less healthy,” said UC Berkeley psychologist Amie Gordon, lead author of the study.

“Our research helps illuminate one factor that leads couples to engage in unnecessary and harmful conflict by showing that couples experience more frequent and severe conflicts after sleepless nights,” she said.

While previous studies indicate that poor sleep has a negative impact on romantic relationships, these new findings shed more light on how bad sleep compromises couples’ ability to avoid and manage conflict, researchers said.

“For the first time, to our knowledge, we can see the process of how the nature, degree, and resolution of conflict are negatively impacted by poor sleep,” said Serena Chen, a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley

When on a blind date..5 things to do!

Blind dates can be tricky! While for all obvious reasons one should not readily give away contact numbers or home addresses in the first meeting, it’s also advisable to end the conversation amicably. Here are five things to remember, when on blind date, according to
http://bollyscan.blogspot.com

Nag your friend for information: If your friend has sent you on a date, then try and get maximum about that person. Not only will this give you an indication of what to expect on your date, but it will also allow you to have some idea of what he likes, dislikes and what both of you have in common.

Have realistic expectations: You’ve got to be real. Have faith that if your friend has sent you on a blind date, he must be sure you’ll like the guy, but don’t be under the illusion that you’ll get Tom Hardy sitting opposite you.

Don't walk away: It’s a blind date. So, there are chances you might not like him, but you don’t have to be rude and tell him that straight on his face. Don’t walk away immediately either. Think of how you would feel if he would have done the same.

Have fun: Don’t forget that you’re there to enjoy each other’s company. So, even if you don’t see it going anywhere romantically, you can still have a good time. If it gets boring or too awkward, simply try and end the date and say goodbye amicably.

Be cautious: Even if the guy is your best friend’s friend, be cautious with what kind of information you give away. No matter how well the date is going, don’t invite him at your house or accept his invitation until you’ve gotten to know each other really well over multiple meetings

How men and women emotionally cooperate with each other

Cooperation is essential in any successful romantic relationship, but how men and women experience cooperation emotionally may be quite different, according to new research conducted at the University of Arizona.

Ashley Randall, a post-doctoral research associate in the UA’s John and
Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences and the UA’s department of psychiatry, has been interested for some time in how romantic partners’ emotions become coordinated with one another. For example, if someone comes home from work in a bad mood we know their partner’s mood might plummet as well, but what are the long-term implications of this on their relationship? Randall wondered how the act of cooperating, a beneficial relationship process, might impact emotional coordination between partners.

“Cooperation – having the ability to work things out with your partner, while achieving mutually beneficial outcomes – is so important in relationships, and I wondered what kind of emotional connectivity comes from cooperating with your partner?” she said. What she found in her recent study were surprising gender differences. She and her colleagues found that during high mutual levels of cooperation with a romantic partner, men typically experience an “inphase” response to their significant other’s emotions. That is, if the woman in the relationship is feeling more positive, the man will feel more positive. If she feels less positive, he will feel less positive.

On the contrary, it seems women experience more of an “antiphase” pattern during high mutual cooperation. If her partner is feeling more positive, she will tend to feel less positive, and vice versa.Social psychology literature on cooperation tells us that women generally tend to cooperate more, while men often try to avoid conflict. Thus, men might be subconsciously syncing their emotions with their partners’ during cooperation in an effort to avoid conflict or reach a speedy resolution, Randall said. The study is published in SAGE’s Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

John Abraham impresses AIATF chief with Madras Cafe

John Abraham’s recent release, Madras Cafe, has drawn critical acclaim from critics and the strong word-of-mouth publicity is reflecting in the box-office figures as well.

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film revolves around the Sri Lankan civil war and its impact on Indian politics.

For instance, on Wednesday, John was visited by Maninderjeet Singh Bitta, who is the chairman of the All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF). He also served as the president of Indian Youth Congress during Narasimha Rao’s tenure as the Prime Minister (1991–1996).

A source close to the actor reveals that Bitta was all praises for the manner in which the film dealt with such a controversial subject. “They (Bitta and John) spoke at length and discussed how he had arrived at the decision to make a film on such a touchy subject. They also spoke about how he gathered all the information so meticulously and translated it perfectly into a film without frills,” says the source.

Breaking news: kareena revealed why she refused to kiss Ajay Devgn.

In Prakash Jha's Satyagraha there is a very romantic erotic love song Ras Se Bhare Tore Nain Saawariya. It's the song where Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan (yes, that's how she is billed for the first time in the credit titles of Satyagraha) get intimate.

The sequence required Kareena and
Devgn to kiss and make love.

However one hears Kareena, otherwise a very dedicated artiste on location in Bhopal, flatly refused do the intimate scene with her co-star.

In Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara, Kareena had done some very intimate scenes with Devgn. But that came before her marriage.

Says a source from the Satyagraha location, "Prakashji wanted at least a brush-on-the-lips since this was a very passionate moment between the lead pair. But now after marriage, Kareena won't do any intimate scenes with any of her co-stars. Not even her own husband Saif. There is a certain code of conduct that Kareena must follow as a Pataudi bahu. Also, Kareena would do nothing to hurt her mother-in-law (Sharmila Tagore) whom she loves dearly."

Easy Tips on How to Lose Weight

Calories from wine, mocha lattes, and soda don't register with your brain's satiety center in the same way that solid food does, so we tend to eat just as much no matter how many caloric beverages we've consumed. But if you can't part with your lattes (we know you don't want to part with your wine), be sure to order them without syrups, flavorings, and whipped cream.

How to Lose Weight Fast

If you want to lose weight faster, you'll need to eat less and exercise more.

For instance, if you take in 1,050 to 1,200 calories a day, and exercise for one hour per day, you could lose 3-5 pounds in the first week, or more if you weigh more than 250 pounds. It's very important not to cut calories any further that's dangerous.

Limiting salt and starches may also mean losing more weight at first
but that's mostly fluids, not fat.

"When you reduce sodium and cut starches, you reduce fluids and fluid retention, which can result in up to 5 pounds of fluid loss when you get started," says Michael Dansinger, MD, of NBC's The Biggest Loser show.

Mamma Mia! Errani admits to cracking under pressure

From the outside, Italy's Sara Errani appears to be living La Dolce Vita, looking as though she hardly has a care in the world. But behind the dazzling smile, she has a dark secret.

Her recent success in tennis has come at a high price. The pressure, she said, had become so overbearing that she was struggling to sleep at night and no longer enjoying the prospect of going on court.

"I don't know why," she told reporters at the U.S. Open on Thursday after a 6-3 6-1 loss to Flavia Pennetta. "I think it's the pressure. Everything is very difficult for me."

The Italian is one of the rising stars of women's tennis, ranked number one in the world in doubles and fifth in singles. She has a globe-trotting lifestyle and has earned nearly $7 million in prize money.

Two days ago, everything seemed in perfect order when she creamed Australia's Olivia Rogowska 6-0 6-0 in a lop-sided first round match that lasted less than an hour. But on Thursday, she was out of the tournament after suffering one of the biggest upsets of the championship.

Then she made a startling admission.

In the cut-throat world of professional sport where athletes go to extreme lengths to hide their weaknesses, Errani revealed all her fears.

"I'm feeling too much pressure," the 26-year-old confessed. "I don't know why, but I'm not enjoying going on the courts, and that is the worst thing a player can have.

"If you go there and you fight and you lose, not my problem ... but the problem is if you go there and you are not fighting."

HEAVY BURDEN

After a modest start to her career, Errani hit her prime in the past two seasons. Last year, she reached her first grand slam final at the French Open and was a semi-finalist in New York.

She also won three grand slam doubles titles - at the Australian, French and U.S. Opens - but it has not always been a fun ride.

The higher she climbed, the heavier the burden. When Maria Sharapova announced earlier this month she was pulling out of the U.S. Open, Errani was promoted to fourth seed and thrust into the shortlist of title contenders.

"I have never been here like this ... so it's a new situation for me," she said. "For my team, not only for me, my coach, we have to find the solution."

Errani said she had been shaking and struggling to sleep for four days before the tournament and didn't want to go on court. Then when she did, she had lost her appetite to fight, which had been her biggest strength.

"I don't want to go on the court. I don't want to go to play. I don't want to stay there on the court. I feel very bad," she said.

"So that is the problem for me ... you have to find your motivation. I have to find a way to like to stay there and fight. That is important."

Despite her loss in singles, Errani is still involved in the doubles, joining forces with her fellow Italian Roberta Vinci to defend the title they won last year, and remains optimistic she can win her own mind games.

"I hope this can make me stronger," she said. "I hope that I will try and I will find the solution and feel better.

"It's not (about) winning or losing. That is not my problem. It's to feel good on the court."

His mission was simple: get some kind of justice for people who were scammed or hurt by a corrupt system.”

Fake Salman Khurshid account tweets on Syria cause flutter

New Delhi: Amid reports of an impending Western military strike on Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons, a fake Twitter account of External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid caused a flutter Wednesday, saying India was in touch with Britain and US over the crisis.

The government complained to the San Francisco-headquartered company and the fake account was blocked within hours.

The imposter Twitter handle 'Salman Khurshid @IndiaMEA' complete with a picture of the external affairs minister, had the posts: "US SECRETARY OF STATE INFORMS OUR GOVERNMENT THAT AN ATTACK ON SYRIA WILL STARTS WITHING 48 HOURS".

Another one went:" Phone talks with British FM W.Hague. Intervention against Syria to start tonight. India expressed concerns."

Its first post went" "This is my official account on Twitter. Welcome! S. Khurshid, Minister of Ext. Relations, India." It also claimed the minister has spoken to the Russian foreign minister on the Syrian crisis.

Soon the Twitter account of India's external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin was flooded with queries asking if the news was true.

@AkbarMEA, the Twitter handle of the official spokesperson, replied to all queries saying: "The handle @IndiaMEA is a fake one masquerading as Minister Khurshid's account. He does not have a Twitter handle." And "@IndiaMEA is a fake account and has been reported to @Twitter."

Within a few hours, the imposter handle was blocked with the message "Sorry! That page does not exist!"

The fake posting caused All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, with Twitter account @asadowaisi, to ask @Akbar MEA: "sir I am sure the GOI is keeping an eye on Syrian crisis as more than 5 million Indians work in that region."

A discerning Twitter account posted: "Seems improbable that India's foreign minister wd spill military secrets divulged in a private phone call on Twitter".

Another account, going as Ranchordas @ControversyChat , posted sarcastically: "@IndiaMEA So now you have started giving breaking news to the world :)"

Prachi Desai loves designer Sonam and Paras Modi's creativity

Mumbai: Actress Prachi Desai, who walked the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW)Winter/Festive 2013 for Sonam and Paras Modi here, said she is a fan of their work, especially since one of their outfits that she once wore still fetches her compliments.

Dressed in a cream lehenga with a sea green and blue border, and teamed with a choli embedded with beads in brown and green, Prachi looked beautiful as she took to the runway for the designer duo on day five of the fashion extravaganza Tuesday.

Prachi was floored by the collection.

It was just recently when I wore one of their outfits for a party and compliments are still pouring in. I totally love their collection and outfits," the 24-year-old said here.

Talking about the collection, Sonam said that it was inspired by a place called Pritam Chowk in Rajasthan.

"The collection we have here is called Angan. It's inspired from a place called Pritam Chowk in Rajasthan. It has these beautiful motifs - peacocks, and the texture and everything has been derived from there," Sonam said.

"We have tried to give it a very traditional Indian look adding a little fusion to it, a little contemporary style," she added.

The show started with a model dancing to "Holiya mein ude re gulaal" in typical Rajasthani style.

Sabyasachi's 'absolute royal' line at LFW

Mumbai: Ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee showcased an absolutely royal collection full of velvet and satin for his comeback show at the Lakme Fashion Week here Tuesday night. He presented a line at the extravaganza after five years, and what a grand finale it was!

The show, sponsored by Lakme Absolute Royal, was inspired by the royal era of queens, and it was indeed classy.

The apparels were heavily embroidered with gold and copper threads, giving them a regal touch. The designer showcased unique saris with distinct designs on the pleats and pallu.

There were also floor-lenth anarkalis, short kurtas with churidars, while the men's collection included heavy sherwanis with turbans.

The colours used for the collection were also majestic - cream, red, black, cream and even peach.

The clothes were royal indeed, but even the ramp and the stage were aptly decorated with grand chandeliers suspended from the cieling, and flowers adorning the entry of the ramp.

The show also began on a different note, with a woman singing live. Thereafter, two to three models walked simultaneously to showcase attires of a similar kind together.

Celebrities including actors Shraddha Kapoor and Milind Soman, as well as designer Rohit Bal attended the show, which turned to be a fitting end to the LFW Winter/ Festive 2013.

The event began Aug 23.

Want to lose weight? Use smartphones

Los Angeles: Get away from healthy eating habits and regular exercises if you want to lose weight as new research shows that smartphones also play a big role in getting into shape.

According to a new study by mobilephonechecker.co.uk, an online platform that offers the best mobile phone deals, as many as one-third of Britishers are now turning to their smartphones when dieting in a bid to help them reach their weight goals.

According to study, 39 percent of people rely heavily on dieting and weight loss phone and tablet application in order to make informed decisions about their food choices.

Also, 81 percent had seen more successful weight loss results through using dieting applications than they did before using them, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I think it is an absolutely fantastic sign that so many people are using their mobile phones to help aid them with weight loss, and seeing effective results from it. It must be hard to try and stick to a diet or low calorie menu when on the go or out at a restaurant, so being able to track food intake in situations like this on a mobile device must be a godsend to some,” said Adam Cable, director of mobilephonechecker.co.uk.

Some of the reasons for using dieting apps included:

- Easier to track calories and food intake at the push of a button

- Can check calorie content of items before deciding to eat them

- Helpful for planning healthy and nutritious meals in advance

- Cheaper and easier alternative to diet books and magazines

Dos and don'ts of glitter!!

New Delhi: Glitter can instantly make dull skin and hair sparkle. But women are often spotted looking like a Christmas tree at weddings and parties as they tend to go overboard with glitter. Know the right way to make body parts like eyes, collar bones, shoulders and leg shine.

Ishika Taneja, international makeup expert and executive director of ALPS Beauty Clinic, recommends using glitter in a very restricted manner on the face.

“The safest way is to use it on the eyes. Apply a base colour on the lids, preferably a strong pigment. Then take the glitter in the same colour (or the same colour family) and apply on the outer corners of the eyes or as a liner for instant glamour. To balance the look, keep rest of the face subtle,” Taneja told IANS.

For the body, she suggests to apply a small amount of glitter on clean and dry skin. Then gently spread it with a round fluffy makeup brush that ensures even application.

“Another way to do it is to mix a small amount of glitter with a body lotion and apply all over the exposed parts of your legs, shoulders, upper arms, decollete, collarbones and cleavage. This ensures an overall subtle shimmer on body. For a chiselled look, mix a small amount of glitter with bronzer and contour your body parts,” she said.

For application on skin, it needs to be dry. But, make sure your hair are not dry and frizzy if you wish to use the product.

“Use spray ons for best result. Take a small section of hair and apply the glitter through the entire length to create streaks of colour. You can do it at two or three different sections of your hair. The glitter should be the final step after you have styled your hair,” said Taneja.

It might look all easy to use the product, but she advises to use a body scrub to flake off dry and rough skin.

“Follow it up with a generous dose of moisturizer. Let the moisturizer sink in completely before applying glitter,” she said.

Taneja advises not to apply glitter on rashes or cuts as it will irritate skin further.

For cheeks, she suggests highlighter instead of glitter.

Once the party is over, make sure to take shower and use a baby oil to remove all the glitter before you call it a night.

Use natural exfoliators to treat sun damage

Los Angeles: As the summer draws to a close, it's time to think about sun-damaged skin. Expert says go for natural exfoliators like jojoba beads and ground apricot kernel.

Linda Horan, Borealis Natural Skincare’s in-house expert, feels that if you have sun damage on the face and neck area, then wear at least a broad spectrum SPF 25 daily apart from exfoliating gently, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

- Some people also opt for “chemical peels” to remove the layer of skin cells including top layer of brown spots. Glycolic acid is an active ingredient that removes several layers of dead cells.

- A natural approach to treat sun damage on skin would be to use natural exfoliators such as jojoba beads and ground apricot kernel.

- Face oils also helps in a big way so omega 3, 6 and 9 oils, lots of fruit, vegetables, lean protein help to restore the lustre to the skin.

- Supplements may help depending on age and overall health and eating habits.

Girl bashes the guy for proposing her!

Girl bashes the guy for proposing her! (watch video) A guy likes a girl, he proposes and they live happily ever after.... err!

Hell! It's 2013 and happily ever after proposals are pages form Mills and Boons... people would agree ...or not!

Here's a story of a cute proposal gone wrong with guy in the end getting beaten up by the love of his life (the one he thought to be).

The incident happened in a Dubai Mall. The plan was set, the guy was ready to take the step forward but what seems to be the turning point here was the unusual reply from girl through toy guitar which came thrashing down at boy's head... ouch!

The couple was usually strolling down the mall in Dubai. During an on-going PR event the guy stopped by and had a word with the event manager, soon the guy openly proposed the girl in front of the entire crowd present.

The crowd went berserk with compliments and clapping but soon came in the shock!

The girl who was equally shocked smiled at first and impromptu jumped, pulled the toy guitar from a nearby stand and slammed it on her boyfriends head!

The crowd was shocked to see such a result of an open proposal.

No points for guessing.... the girl went straight out of the mall and the guy was left to be attended by floor manager for first aid.

So next time you plan a surprise proposal... there'll be no harm in carrying a first aid box instead of a.... err Ring!

Breaking NEWS: Floods affect Sino-Russia border trade

Beijing: The recent floods and storms in China's northeast regions have hit trade with Russia, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

The floods, which have so far claimed 85 lives and left 105 missing, are the worst to hit the region in more than a decade, and have prompted the closure of six river ports in China's Heilongjiang province.

"There has been barely any business since the closure of ports. I have been on a daily losses of around a hundred dollars for nearly a month," said Qiang Zhanjun, a wholesaler at Tongxin market in Tongjiang city, a major trading centre in Heilongjiang.

"August and September used to be boom season for Russian traders purchasing clothes, shoes and household appliances in China, but the floods have meant cancelled contracts," said Yu Xueping, chief of Tongjiang Customs.

Tongjiang, one of the most important river ports for frontier trade with Russia, witnessed an import volume of $25 million and exports of $236 million in 2012, according to Yu.

The port closed Aug 8 due to rising water levels on the Heilongjiang river, and the impact of the flood is expected to last till the end of September.

Imports may decline 70 percent when compared with the same period last year, Yu said.

Traders in Fuyuan port, 65 km away from Khabarovsk city in Russia, used to get thousands of visitors from Russia daily, but now are feeling the pinch.

Teng runs a business selling digital products and kitchen utensils. She said the floods and closure of Fuyuan port meant she was "losing a mink coat every three days".

Chu Yinting, a general manger of Tongxin Trade Co. Ltd, said the ports in Russia also suffered from the floods.

"Even if the ports reopen in September, the resumption of trade will take time," Chu said

Breaking news: US Hunger Strike: Prisoners on hunger strike close to death in California

Dozens of California state prison inmates have been staging a hunger strike for more than seven weeks, prompting a federal judge last week to approve a request to force-feed them if necessary.

Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said on Tuesday that 92 inmates have been refusing prison-issued meals since July 8, when nearly 32,000 of the system’s 133,000 prisoners began the hunger strike.

The inmates are protesting the holding of gang leaders and other violent inmates in solitary confinement that can last for decades.

“We want to be prepared. Rather than wait for the situation to become critical, we wanted to have that order in place should it become necessary to assist in the refeeding of an inmate,” said Michael Stainer, Acting Director of Division of Adult Institutions for CDCR after a judge approved the force-feeding measures.

Dr. Steven Tharratt, director of medical services for the federal official who oversees medical care for California’s prisons, said if the state employs force-feeding, it’s most likely to be done by pumping nutrient-enriched fluids into the bloodstreams of unconscious inmates.

State prison officials have struggled to deal with a hunger strike that started last month and, at its height, involved thousands of inmates.

There are 46 inmates who have refused anything more than water, vitamins and electrolytes since July 8 to protest the yearslong isolation of gang leaders.

Marie Levin, the sister of Pelican Bay SHU inmate and hunger strike organiser Ronnie Dewberry, spoke of her dismay at the treatment of her brother and the other prisoners.

“My brother is willing to go to these extremes because of the conditions they are being treated under. The inhumane treatment has been horrendous all these decades.
And he’s saying that now we’re going to do something about it. It’s like, enough is enough,” said Levin.

Monday’s order by US District Judge Thelton Henderson of San Francisco could come into play.

He has given state officials permission to disregard inmates’ do-not-resuscitate directives if the officials believe the inmates acted under duress, for instance under threats by gang leaders who organised the hunger strike on behalf of inmates held indefinitely in California’s Security Housing Units.

Many of the hard core strikers are likely to reach crisis stage in the next two weeks as they reach 60 to 70 days without significant nutrition, added Dr Tharratt.

Breaking news: 20 killed in Kenya's inter-clan clash

Nairobi: At least 20 people were killed and more than 15 others got injured Wednesday in fresh inter-clan clashes in the northern Kenyan border town of Moyale, an official said.

Deadly skirmishes between Borana and Gabra communities broke out early Wednesday in Moyale in Marsabit county, which is less than a km from the neighbouring Ethiopia, bringing panic across the restive region, Xinhua reported.

"I can confirm as the leader in charge of the county that 20 people were killed in five spontaneous attacks on five villages in the town. The fighting started early in the morning and has subsided," Marsabit County Governor Ukur Yatani said.

"Five people were killed in Manyatta Burji, four in Odda and the rest were killed in Funan-Nyatta, Sessi and Helu. Those killed were from the both feuding clans and the including children and women," he added.

Fighting between the Borana and Gabra communities began in December 2011, mostly over control of resources such as water and grazing land but the conflict has also been linked to politics.

Moyale district has been the scene of recent tribal clashes involving mainly Borana and Gabra communities of Kenya. In February, more than 30,000 Kenyans crossed into neighbouring Ethiopia following an inter-communal conflict in the region.

US launches rocket carrying spy satellite

Washington: A rocket carrying a spy satellite lifted off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in the US state of California Wednesday, sources said.

The United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing, announced through its Facebook and Twitter webcast that the satellite was launched on a Delta IV Heavy rocket, the largest of the kind, at 11:03 a.m. local time, Xinhua reported

However, it did not say when the satellite would enter the orbit.

The launch was named as the NROL-65 mission as it was done for the National Reconnaissance Office, which is in charge of US intelligence-gathering satellites, according to the sources in United Launch Alliance, which also developed the rocket together with the US Air Force.

Details about the satellite is not available. But a report in the Los Angeles Times said the payload in Wednesday's launch is said to be "a $1-billion high-powered spy satellite capable of snapping pictures detailed enough to distinguish the make and model of an automobile hundreds of miles below."
